As a wife and a Mother of two, I am always so busy running around. With my partner working all day, and my daughter now in school, trying to find time to all sit down together and catch up on our day was starting to get a bit difficult. Dinner time seemed to be the time we all could sit down together— but we were disconnected. We found ourselves on our phones or with the tv on in the background and not fully engaged with each other. That’s when we knew something needed to change.

We laid some ground rules for dinner. We started with not having any phones or iPads at the table and the tv turned off. Dinner time was going to be the time that we talked with each other and talked about our day. We start our dinner conversation by asking questions. We go around and ask each other what are our favorite part of the day was. On Sundays, we go a bit further and not only ask about our favorite part of the day, but something that we each can work on for the upcoming week and one thing we are thankful for. I love listening to my daughter talk about her day and see her face light up when are asking her questions. Just knowing we can sit down and give each other our full attention is wonderful. Those questions always lead into further conversations and lots of laughter.

We also implemented a fun game once we all had our chance at talking about our day. My daughter calls is the “princess game”. We each take turns thinking of a Disney movie or princess and have to give everyone hints on what it might be. Then we all take turns guessing. It’s a fun little trivia game and even when we go over to someone else’s house we end up playing it.

It’s something that has really worked for my family and something we all really enjoy. I can’t wait to see how these conversations evolve as my children get older. Dinner time is something we all look forward too now, and has become our favorite family ritual.
